Tako so zgornjo plast \u0161ele leta 1905 premazali z asfaltom in s tem vsaj delno prepre\u010dili vdor vode v ustroj viadukta. \u017dal pa je ta poseg pri\u0161el prepozno. Voda in zmrzal sta \u017ee na\u010dela ope\u010dnate oboke. Tudi promet je z leti postajal vse gostej\u0161i, vlaki pa \u010dedalje te\u017eji in vse hitrej\u0161i. To je povzro\u010dilo, da so\u00a0 tresljaji \u0161e bolj na\u010denjali zgornji del viadukta. To je bilo \u0161e posebej izrazito v \u010dasu prve svetovne vojne, ko so \u010dez viadukt proti fronti vozili vlaki s te\u017eko voja\u0161ko opremo. Zaradi bli\u017eine fronte in pomembnosti \u017eelezni\u0161kih povezav v vojnem \u010dasu, je Borovni\u0161ki viadukt med prvo svetovno vojno varovala stra\u017ea \u010drnovojnikov. To so bile enote, sestavljene iz prestarih ali premladih mo\u017e za fronto. Opravljali so zaledne naloge, predvsem varovanje pomembnih voja\u0161kih objektov.<\/p>\n<p>Stanje viadukta je nazorno opisal \u010dlanek\u00a0 \u010dasopisu Jutro v oktobru 1939: \u00bb<em>Pazljivo oko odgovornih \u010diniteljev pri progovzdr\u017eevalnih sekcijah se ni varalo pri raznih pregledih objekta in neprestanih zbolj\u0161avanjih in izmenjavah opeke, da v notranjosti zgradbe viadukta preve\u010d popu\u0161\u010da trdnost materiala. Posebno malo odpornosti je pokazala v notranjosti obokov se nahajajo\u010da stara mokra opeka. Tudi suhi stari gradbeni material ni bil dosti bolj\u0161i. Preiskave na doma\u010dih znanstvenih zavodih so pokazale nezadostno tla\u010dno trdnost kg\/cm2 v primerjanju z novo sedaj izdelano opeko. Toda nikdo ni kos nalogi, da bi se mogel pri isto\u010dasnem temeljitem zbolj\u0161evanju in izmenjavanju obokov vr\u0161iti tudi isto\u010dasno neoviran vlakovni promet preko njih. Poskusi, da bi se zavarovali posamezni dotrpeli deli obokov z betonskimi plombami, se niso obnesli. Zdrobili so se in izpadli. Hrastove zagozde prehitro strohnijo ter tudi niso odporne, da bi nadomestovale nastale vrzeli.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Poleg navedenih notranjih \u00bbbolezni\u00ab, trpi borovni\u0161ki viadukt tudi na bole\u010dinah v \u00bbnogah\u00ab. Nekoliko resnice so res napisali o tem na\u0161i \u010dasopisi. Pretiravali pa so, ko so poro\u010dali, da trpijo ro\u0161ti nosilnih stebrov zaradi osu\u0161evanja Ljubljanskega barja. Tudi trditev, da so hrastovi piloti, zabiti v dno mo\u010dvirja zaradi nahajanja med zrakom in vodo odnehali ali celo strohneli, ne odgovarja povsem dejstvu. Zaradi tega bi mogel most prena\u0161ati \u0161e dolgo vrsto let te\u017eko pezo brze\u010dih vlakov. Predvsem trpi nosilnost viadukta na dotrajani vrednosti gradiva v obokih samih. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Zato so se odlo\u010dili strokovnjaki za odvod proge med Preserjem in Borovnico. Ope\u010dni oboki, debeli 120 centimetrov, so bili trhli do globine 80 centimetrov. Malta v fugah opek je bila popolnoma izprana. Po\u0161kodovana mesta so sku\u0161ali popraviti tako da so v oboke izdolbli 50 centimetrov globoke odprtine in po\u0161kodbe zazidali z novo opeko in betonom. Za naporno in nevarno delo na obokih zgornje eta\u017ee viadukta v vi\u0161ini do 35 metrov, so izdelali poseben vise\u010d oder. Zidarji so delali na odru, ki je zelo nihal, saj po dolini v\u010dasih piha zelo mo\u010dan veter. Pri\u0161lo je tudi do nesre\u010d, ko so delavci omahnili v globino. Nekaj se jih je kon\u010dalo tudi s smrtnim izidom.<\/p>\n<p>Seveda so se upravljalci \u017eeleznic trudili, da bi Borovni\u0161ki viadukt ohranjali v kolikor toliko dobrem stanju. Zaradi velikosti viadukta pa je bilo nemogo\u010de zbrati dovolj denarja za resno obnovo. Progovna sekcija je 27. aprila 1927 poslala na Direkcijo dr\u017eavnih \u017eeleznic:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00bbDodatno k na\u0161emu poro\u010dilu \u0161t. 1786-25 z dne 17. 6. 1926 in 22. 12. 1926 sporo\u010damo, da se ru\u0161ijo olaj\u0161evalni oboki \u0161e naprej. Odprtina v oboku pri 7. stebru je dosegla velikost 2.0 x 1.0 m, zato obstaja nevarnost, da se zru\u0161i cel obok, kar bi imelo za posledico, da se naglo zni\u017ea tir. Kaj bi temu sledilo, je lahko nedogledna katastrofa. Radi tega prosimo, da se nam takoj priskrbi vsaj 1500 kosov trdo \u017egane opeke (klinker) in vsaj 500 kg cementa, da si vsaj za prvo silo pomagamo.\u00a0 Situacija je izredno resna, zato prosimo takoj\u0161nega odgovora, ali direkcija kaj ukrene ali ne, ker sicer bomo morali sami\u00a0 nujno kupiti najpotrebnej\u0161i\u00a0 material brez ozira na predpise: ni mogo\u010de \u010dakati, da nam \u0161e \u2013 le kaka nesre\u010da odpre vrata, da pridemo do popravil, ki so sedaj absolutno potrebna. Gornja pro\u0161nja se ti\u010de samo najnujnej\u0161ega popravila. Vse skupaj pa ni veliko pomagalo. Avgusta 1938 so opravili meritve vibracij viadukta in ugotovil nevarna nihanja v sredini viadukta med vo\u017enjo vlaka. Zato so istega leta omejili najve\u010djo hitrost vlakov preko viadukta na 10 km\/h in na viaduktu zvarili tirnice. Obenem so merili tudi vi\u0161ino podtalnice ob nekaterih stebrih viadukta. Za ta namen so skopali 15 metrov globoke vodnjake. Vi\u0161ina podtalnice se je gibala od 2 do 2,5 metrov pod nivojem zemlje, tako da so zgornji piloti pod temelji stebrov segali do 13 centimetrov iz vode. Da bi ugotovili natan\u010dno sestavo tal ob stebrih, so leta 1940 izvedli sondiranje terena v globini 15 metrov. Ugotovili so, da je teren naplavljen s peskom, kamenjem in ilovico. Avgusta 1938 je posebna komisija pod vodstvom ing. Maksa Klodi\u010da opravila komisijski ogled stanja viadukta. Pripravili so ve\u010d predlogov za re\u0161itve Borovni\u0161kega viadukta. Prva je predvidevala gradnjo novega viadukta poleg obstoje\u010dega, vendar so to mo\u017enost opustili zaradi prevelike cene gradnje, poleg tega pa bi bil viadukt ponovno zgrajen na barjanskih tleh, kar bi pomenilo mo\u017enost pogrezanja. Druga varianta, ki jo je podpirala tudi oblast v Beogradu, je predvidevala izgradnjo ogromnega nasipa namesto viadukta. Ta nasip bi korenito spremenil izgled kraja, poleg tega pa ne bi bil dosti cenej\u0161i od viadukta. Tretji predlog je vseboval temeljito sanacijo viadukta tako, da bi z zajezitvijo dvignili nivo podtalnice in podzidali oboke oziroma jih celo zamenjali. Zaradi izrednih tehni\u010dnih zahtev in visoke cene so tudi ta predlog opustili.
